You may not realize that Maximum’s headquarters is located in Wilmington, North Carolina. Wilmington is home to beautiful beaches, a rich historic downtown, and many exciting things to do. We love where we live all year round, but fall in Wilmington just might win as our favorite time of the year. Often referred to as “the local’s summer,” autumn in the Cape Fear region is when everyone takes a deep breath of relief. The summer crowds head home, the temperatures drop, and “Wilmingtonians” step outside to enjoy their gorgeous city. Today we would like to share something a little different on the blog: a peek into what fall in Wilmington is like. We are inviting you to join us on some of our favorite ways to enjoy this time of year in Coastal NC.
Exploring our historic downtown is a great way to learn more about Wilmington. This time of the year is perfect for strolling through the streets, stopping by local businesses, grabbing a bite to eat, coffee, simply taking in the beautiful views. Make sure to include the Riverwalk in your stroll and snap a picture of the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge – a Wilmington icon.
The Battleship N.C.
While you’re downtown, be sure to stop by The Battleship North Carolina, a historic WWII battleship that calls the Cape Fear River home. You can stroll the boardwalk around her perimeter for free, or pay a small fee to get a full tour of the ship. The refreshing temperatures make fall a perfect time to explore, and you’ll get an excellent history lesson.
For Wilmington locals, fall is the best time to head to the beach. Taking a stroll along the water’s edge, hunting for unique shells, or bringing a picnic to eat are just a few ways to enjoy the sun and sand this season. Fall means the summer crowds have headed home and it’s the quiet locals beach once again. This time of the year can be a busy season, but making the time to enjoy the tranquility of the waves is something we never regret. Our favorite local beaches are: Wrightsville Beach, Carolina Beach, Kure Beach, and Fort Fisher.
Restaurants, Coffee Shops, and Breweries, oh my!
Fall is a perfect time for stopping by one of our favorite restaurants and coffee shops in Wilmington, or check out our brewery scene. Outdoor dining is the perfect fall activity to enjoy our gorgeous city. For a great burger, be sure to stop by Fork n’ Cork or the Copper Penny. To get the best Indian and Thai food you can’t miss Indochine. For a unique twist, Panamanian food at Ceviche’s is unforgettable. Our favorite midtown coffee shops are Drift Coffee & Kitchen and Casablanca, both offering a modern vibe and a comfortable place to meet with a friend or get work done. A popular pit stop is Bespoke Coffee & Dry Goods, located in the Historic District downtown.
For a classic Wilmington coffee stop, Port City Java has been in business for 25 years and has over 25 locations. Wilmington is home to a growing brewery scene, and some of our favorites are Wilmington Brewing Company, Wrightsville Beach Brewery, Mad Mole Brewing, and Flytrap Brewing. You don’t want to miss any of these spots on your next visit!
History and Hauntings
Going on the Ghost Walk Tour is the perfect way to get in the spooky spirit of this season. The tour consists of a 90-minute walk through downtown Wilmington’s most haunted homes and burial grounds. During the tour, you will hear many ghost stories and might even encounter one yourself! Another great stop if you want to hear the historical tales of some of Wilmington’s finest is a walking tour at Oakdale Cemetery. Oakdale opened in 1852 and was North Carolina’s first rural cemetery, which simply means it was intended to be burial grounds set amongst beautiful gardens on a large plot of land. If you are interested in taking a self-guided walking tour, they provide maps and stories on their website. Prepare to get lost for hours in the beautiful and mysterious Oakdale Cemetery.
So, there you have it. A sneak peek into why we love our gorgeous city and all it has to offer. While we may be slightly biased, Wilmington is one of the best places to live, and more importantly the best place for Maximum Design headquarters to be! Stop in for a visit next time you are passing through. There will be plenty of adventures to be had and memories to be made. Our point on the map just might turn into a place in your heart, too.
